Description

This class is best suited for beginner and intermediate level artists who would like to improve their drawing-from-observation skills. We will teach you techniques like stippling, cross-hatching, and blending. We will also give you pointers on observing proportions, shapes, and angles for more accurate drawing.

Instructor will have some basic skill-learning projects (both drawing still life from live set ups and drawing from photographs) but students should also bring their ideas about the subject matter they are interested in drawing. If you bring your current drawing projects, we will offer a constructive critique, giving you tips on how to bring it to a professional finish, including strengthening the composition, and analyzing the values and colors to make it more dynamic. Students should bring some basic drawing supplies but we will also have various drawing media for you to try out.

Students will need:

  1. A sketchbook, 60lb or heavier is best, not too small, 9×12 or 11×14 is good.
  2. A #2 pencil and a soft eraser as a minimum; if you have an assortment of hard (H) and soft (B) pencils, that is even better. A kneaded eraser or a soft white vinyl one are best so as to not damage the paper.
  3. You may also bring any other favorite drawing supplies, charcoal, pastels, ink, etc.
