2D Classes

This class is best suited for beginner and intermediate watercolorists and will explore different watercolor techniques and materials. Depending on the students' needs, we will start with learning about the materials (types of paints, brushes, and paper), then move on to some basic composition and color mixing skills, brush techniques, water control and flow, and some special effects that can be achieved with things you probably already have in your home.

Instructor will have some basic skill-learning projects but students should also bring their ideas about the subject matter they are interested in painting. Students will get individualized instruction on their projects as they learn the best techniques to achieve the look they want. Students should bring their watercolor supplies (although the instructor will have some to share for demonstrations).

Students will need:

  1. A block or pad of watercolor paper, 140lb or heavier is best, doesn't have to be large, 9x12 or 11x14 is good. (We have some at the studio that students may purchase for 30 cents apiece.)
  2. Your favorite watercolor paints, either tubes or pans work fine, I recommend an assortment of 6-12 colors and a plastic or ceramic mixing palette.
  3. Several watercolor brushes, a large flat one and 2 or 3 sizes of rounds, maybe a #2 for details, a #4 or #6, and a larger one if you like to work fairly large, #10 or #12 is good.
  4. A pencil and a soft eraser.

If you are new to watercolor and unsure of what to buy, instructor will demo and explain tools and supplies the first week so maybe wait to buy your supplies until then.

This class is best suited for beginner and intermediate level artists who would like to improve their drawing-from-observation skills. We will teach you techniques like stippling, cross-hatching, and blending. We will also give you pointers on observing proportions, shapes, and angles for more accurate drawing.

Instructor will have some basic skill-learning projects (both drawing still life from live set ups and drawing from photographs) but students should also bring their ideas about the subject matter they are interested in drawing. If you bring your current drawing projects, we will offer a constructive critique, giving you tips on how to bring it to a professional finish, including strengthening the composition, and analyzing the values and colors to make it more dynamic. Students should bring some basic drawing supplies but we will also have various drawing media for you to try out.

Students will need:

  1. A sketchbook, 60lb or heavier is best, not too small, 9x12 or 11x14 is good.
  2. A #2 pencil and a soft eraser as a minimum; if you have an assortment of hard (H) and soft (B) pencils, that is even better. A kneaded eraser or a soft white vinyl one are best so as to not damage the paper.
  3. You may also bring any other favorite drawing supplies, charcoal, pastels, ink, etc.

For Students

Classes are paid for at the beginning of each session. Class sessions run for 6 consecutive weeks. Missed classes can be made up only within the current session.

Lockers are available for currently enrolled students. They can be used for personal items, tools, and bisque. They must be cleaned out at the end of the session.

Tools are provided for children and teen classes. A limited variety of tools are available for adult classes. These should be returned to the shelves clean. And please do not borrow tools from other students without asking.

Inexpensive clay tool sets can be purchased through your instructor You might want to consider keeping your special tools in a plastic shoe box in your locker.

Each student can use up to 25 lbs of clay. See your instructor to purchase additional clay. Some clays may need to be ordered.

Shelves are labeled for 1) greenware, 2) bisque, and 3) glazed pieces. Work should be signed. If you are not sure where to put your work, ask your instructor.

We all look forward to ample table space at which to work. All tables need to be cleared after each class in preparation for the next class. Work cannot be stored on the tables except with permission of your instructor.

Large pieces present problems in construction, glazing, and firing. Please discuss your ideas for large sculptural pieces with you instructor first.

All wet work must be completed by the 5thweek of the session. No exceptions.

Improperly constructed or glazed pieces can damage the kiln or other students’ work and cannot be fired.

Clay on Main has selected certain clay bodies and glazes that work well in our studio. If you wish to use other clays or glazes you must check with Dolores. No exceptions.

Please help to keep the studio and tables clean. Do not eat or drink in the studio.

Check the website or with your instructor for any changes in open studio hours.
